Ripe, Stinky Cheese

Looking for a special treat, we ended up at Whole Foods cheese counter.  We asked for a “ripe, stinky cheese.”  Normally, such a cheese is hard to find in these parts of the woods.  But based on the cheese folks’ recommendation, we got half a round of an organic cow’s milk cheese.  It was an epiphany of stink and ripeness–pungently delicious:  Cow Girl Creamery’s “Red Hawk.”   Although we don’t usually like the Whole Foods baguettes, we bought one fresh out of the oven, and it too was a treat.

Located in Point Reyes, Cow Girl Creamery describes the Red Hawk as

a triple-cream, washed-rind, fully-flavored cheese made from organic cow milk from the Straus Family Dairy. Aged four weeks and washed with a brine solution that tints the rind a sunset red-orange, Red Hawk won Best-In-Show at the American Cheese Society’s Annual Conference in 2003 and a Gold Ribbon and 2nd Best-in-Show in 2009.

$18 gets you the whole round…we asked for half.  It’s worth the money.
